Sometimes, people wonder how on earth will a student do an exam 21 times before passing. Before you think too much, IELTS has made that a possibility. Having had encounters with about 1000 students (students, nurses, doctors, pharmacists, professors, and consultants) who have done the IELTS training under us, I came up with these proven facts so that you will not become another victim.
Here below are some of the factors that underlie people’s failure.
1. Inadequate time to prepare for the Exam
Inadequate time to prepare for the exam due to a deadline or a prerequisite exam that must not expire. E.g. CBT for nurses. My advice here is to pass the IELTS first before doing the other exam. If you do the professional exam first, you will be under pressure to pass IELTS by all means and as soon as possible. This can result in multiple failures. The failure will not be because you aren’t smart, but because of the psychological pressure on you.
2. The wrong notion of IELTS is a test of English knowledge.
It’s more of a test of English skills. Your productive skills(speaking and writing) and receptive skills(listening and reading) are being tested. This is what leads many people to think they can read to pass instead of practice to pass. Some will just take lessons without practising well. They feel great lectures alone are what they need. So, they resign their hope and fate to good IELTS teachers. One secret for you here is that, if you can’t practice what you have learned well, you can’t pass IELTS
3. Inability to prioritize what they want to achieve for the moment
Some people want to do many things at the time of their preparation and this makes them lack the focus required to pass at a sitting.
4. Poor Time Management
Inability to plan their time and schedules very well to allow for adequate time to study and practice.
5. Localize IELTS Preparation
You can’t practice like this and pass. You must practice IELTS in your daily life. All you do and say must reflect the skills you have learned in speaking, listening, and writing. If people around you and in your office can not notice a change in your spoken English, you are likely still playing with yourself.
6. Psychological Pressure
Another silent but serious reason why most fail is due to the financial burden they went through in the process of the exam. For example, an average nurse in Nigeria is not earning up to the cost of the exam. This is enough intimidation for anyone who is not stable emotionally. Another issue is what-will-people-say-if- I-fail syndrome. For this reason, they put so much tension on their minds before and during the exam. They feel they are hunted by a ghost of failure.
7. Foundational Problems
If the foundation is destroyed, what shall the righteous do?
I have met students that come to me to train for IELTS, and even I, as a tutor didn’t want to admit them to my academy. Because I knew their English foundation wasn’t properly laid. How do I work on a 30-year of faulty foundation in just a month of training? What magic wand do I wave? However, there is hope for these people too, if they don’t rush to take the exam, but can devote months, possibly a year to adequately review their elementary background in the language. Unfortunately, people don’t have this patience.
8. Laziness and inability to sacrifice.
Most students think they can pass IELTS without giving effort or spending money on training. They want to have it cheaply. Truth be told, you need to commit hours upon hours of practice to your IELTS preparation before you can pass. To jettison serious practice is to write an invitation letter to failure.
9. Wrong belief and mindset
This is a result of the high failure rate. Most people are deceived into thinking that the exam is hard. Because of this mental stronghold, they develop a fear of the exam. And this fear leads to mental paralysis and repeated failure.
10. Self-studying without assessment
Most students underrate IELTS and go online to source materials and watch YouTube. Sincerely, some, maybe, I say, few of these people pass. The reason why most don’t pass is that they lack the means of evaluating and assessing what they have learned. There is no one to mark their writing or access their speaking. No evaluation, no learning, and no growth! Another reason is that these people end up confused. After all, they hear different things from different teachers and end up not knowing which is correct.
11. Self-practice without a learning experience.
Most students practice IELTS questions mindlessly. They ask questions without going back to reevaluate the answers. Why did I miss this? What must I do to prevent it next time?
12. Delay of training and tutorial
The final reason why most people fail IELTS is that they delay their training and tutorials till when they need the result. You will hear them say, “I will start when I get my passport”, “I will start next year”, and “I will start when I am ready for the exam”. The truth is most of these people fail in their first attempt or even never sit for it.
