As a man thinks in his heart, so does his life becomes. Your mind determines almost everything you get in life. Many students start their IELTS training with the wrong mentality. Some believe the exam is too difficult and so they can’t pass it. Others feel they just need to find a shortcut to get the result. Some have a serious fear of it because of the rumor of failures they have heard from people close to them.
The most popular disposition of mind is the let-me-just-pass-and-go mentality. Having this notion means you are just concerned about having the score required alone and nothing more. You don’t want to pass extraordinarily, you don’t want to think about all you are learning other than for the exams alone. This means once you passed the exam, you forget all the important English skills you learned. This way of thought is not perfect, it’s average and mediocre. If you have only one arrow to shoot, aim at the sun, if perchance you miss your target, you will land among the stars.
What then is the best posture of heart towards the IELTS exam? It is that you must see it as a journey to personal development. You must approach it with the mind of having Band 9.
At Grace Edu Consult, we trained even students that need 4.5 for caregiver slots as though they need Band 7/8. We are intentional about their lessons.
Now, what does it means to approach IELTS with a self-development mindset? This shows that your purpose in training for the exam is to be the best version of yourself. You want to compete against yourself. You want to overtake your laziness and laxity. You want to see the IELTS lesson as an avenue to be a sound, intelligent and fluent speaker of the English language. You aim to be a global citizen.
Advantages of thinking this way:
- With this kind of mindset, you will have more than the score you need.
- It will not be too hard for you to dedicate yourself and go the extra mile to prepare. For example, you may need to revise punctuation rules, rules of Concord, sentence structures, and so on. You will need to start reading books and kinds of literature, watching informative Youtube videos, the BBC news app, and the YouTube page. You may need to download the podcast to listen to daily. You will need to practice over and over with many IELTS past questions. All these are personal efforts no one can help you make. I tell people that 5 weeks or even 2 months of training is too small for any IELTS tutor to correct a serious foundational English problem. But my experience has shown that if the student is also willing to sacrifice by reading ahead and getting the right exposure to books, it can be attained. If you leave your training alone to what you are being taught, you won’t get the best in your IELTS journey and sadly, nothing will change about your life.
You will end up coming out as a changed, transformed, and brilliant person even after the exam is gone. You will be proud of who you have become. A woman came to us, she said I am doing this exam to prove to my husband that Im a smart person and that I can do something with my life. And that’s exactly what she did. She had an overall of Band 7, but she needed just 4.5. She is the oldest woman we have ever taught who had such an amazing score. She had band 8 in her listening. This is exceptional. You need to see how this woman was serious with her classes. She stays extra time and submits her assignment, and read extra resources. It’s now a testimony. The pain of preparation doesn’t match the joy of manifestation.
